Jacquie explores the role of the Thoraco-Lumbar Junction, located between T12-L1. However, by extending this diamond-shaped bodily geographic region, she feels it is a ‘Crossrail’ for the following musculo-skeletal structures and Fascial Lines listed below and the movements that are made by them:
• The deep and superficial spinal muscles found in the Deep Fascial Front line and Superficial Back Line.
• The Shoulder Girdle muscles of the Posterior Deep and Superficial Arm Lines.
• The Shoulder Joint muscle, the Latissimus Dorsi, in the Functional Line.
• The Transversus Abdominis, & Internal Oblique muscles of the Deep Front Line.
• The Psoas Major muscle of the Hip Joint in the Deep Front Line.
• The Gluteus Maximus of the Hip Joint in the Functional Line.
Thus the spine, shoulder girdles, shoulder joints and hip joints are all affected by movements involving the Thoraco-Lumbar Junction.

Jacquie celebrated 20 years of teaching Body Control Pilates in February 2019. Having qualified with The London College of Dance & Drama in 1963 to teach dance in the following disciples of Ballet, Ballroom, Modern, Natural Movement, Classical Greek and European National Dance, Jacquie taught in Ballet Schools in the 1960’s & 70’s but opened her own Keep Fit Studio in the ‘80’s in Durban and found Body Control Pilates in the 1990’s. Although living in South Africa since 1965, Jacquie has found time to extend her movement education qualifying in STOTT Pilates in 2002 and attending BASI workshops.
Her Pilates journey was interrupted in 2005 when she fractured her spine in three places. Six medicos agreed that her Pilates teaching saved her from the wheelchair. Her injuries were such that they reckoned she should not be able to walk!
Throughout her 56 years of teaching career Jacquie has based her classes on the two years of Anatomy training she received at College and continues to keep up to date with the latest medical and anatomical research. Jacquie has attended every autumn Development Weekend since 2000. Attending the lectures and workshops of Elizabeth Larkam, Tom Myers, Cameron Angus, Cheryl Liss, Miranda Bass and many of the Body Control Pilates presenters continues to be a major source of Jacquie’s inspiration as well as her clients at her studio in Johannesburg, South Africa, Purple Pilates.
However, in 2006 Jacquie discovered the many benefits of the work of Moshe Feldenkrais. Jacquie incorporates this and many of the movements that are appropriate gleaned from her dance training into many of her classes and into this workshop. Her most recent sources of inspiration was attending a Chronic Pain Workshop by Anthony Carey at the Body Control Pilates Centre, followed by the “Feet Fascia and Function Summit” hosted by James Earls at The Natural History Museum in London in 2019.
